The Amato's Bakery

Many customers claim the real secret to the "Real Italian" sandwich is the soft, chewy roll that holds the meat, cheese and vegetables and absorbs the flavorful oil.

The same rolls that Giovanni Amato originally sold on the docks of Portland in 1902 are still produced by the Amato's Bakery today - proudly operated by Giovanni's great grandsons, John and Anthony. In addition to the Italian sandwich rolls and the traditional loaves of Italian bread Maine's Oldest Italian Bakery is famous for, the brothers also produce a full line of other breads including wheat, rye, bulky rolls, and dinner rolls.
